*Ren Nanashino's Diary of the Heart

I’m writing a diary. I plan to update daily!

2008/10/13

Pleased to meet you

Today, I decided to start a blog.

But first, I’ll introduce myself.

My name is Ren Nanashino.

I actually wanted to upload my photo, but someone said that uploading personal information onto the Internet is dangerous. So instead, I’ve uploaded a sketch.

To be honest, I got my wife to do the drawing.

My wife’s name is Yuki. She’s six years older than I am.

I told her, “I decided to start a blog, so please draw my picture.” In five quick minutes, she was done.

Just as I expected from a former illustrator. She’s so good!

Don’t I look too cool…?

Anyways, the reason we started a blog was to write about our whimsical everyday lives in a diary.

Anniversary

Hey, Ren here!

Today’s October 15, and it’s a really important day. My little Yuki and I are celebrating our first anniversary!

To celebrate, we bought a whole cake and brought it home. It was hard on the wallet, but the flavor was great!

It was so good, I had two pieces. That’s when Yuki scolded me and said, “That’s too much, you’ll get fat!” (groan)

We put the remaining four pieces in the fridge. We’ll have them tomorrow.

Second day of cake

Ren here!

Today’s dessert was yesterday’s leftover shortcake.

Doesn’t cake taste better if it was left overnight?

Yuki laughed and said, “It’s not like curry!” But I feel that cake on the second day tastes better. What does everyone think?

Friday

Today’s Friday! It’s almost the weekend, so the town’s bustling!

But my job only gives me one day off a week, so I don’t get to enjoy Fridays.

Whelp, tonight we had curry. Yesterday, little Yuki mentioned curry, so she said she wanted to eat some.

She keeps things so simple, it’s adorable!

I had two extra helpings.

Right, one more day of work then I get a day off! Gotta stay strong!

End of the week!

Ren here!

The week’s done, finally! I’m pooped!

Manual labor’s tough when you’re in your late 20s. My lower back’s getting uncomfortable…

That’s not good. I’ll rest up tomorrow real good and get ready for next week!

Planning a trip

Ren here!

I took a break from updating for two days!

To anyone who was looking for an update, sorry!

Speaking of, do I even have anyone looking for updates…? (feeling nervous…)

Tonight, me and Yuki made plans for a trip.

Next week Saturday, I’m getting a rare day off, so we’re thinking of spending two days and one night on a hot spring trip. I wonder if we should go somewhere around Hakone?

I’m really looking forward to it now!

Chicken and daikon radishes

Ren here!

Today at work, for the first time in a while, a senior got mad at me… (boo hoo)

I’ve worked here for years, I thought I was a full-grown adult, but I still have a lot to learn. Gotta keep at it…

Tonight’s dinner was chicken and daikon radishes.

The bone-in chicken was full of flavor and was really good! It was my favorite meal since I was a kid!

Little Yuki liked it too. She ate lots, all the while saying, “It’s so good, it’s so good!”

Ren

2008/10/23

Chose an inn

Ren here.

We planned out our hot spring trip!

We decided to stay at Miyake Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn near the Hakone train station, since it seems to be cheap and the food is good.

Recently, my lower back’s been hurting, so I’ve been thinking about soaking in a hot spring and refreshing my body!

Ren

2008/10/26

Disappointed…

Ren here!

I just got back from the hot spring.

Is it okay… if I complain just a little…?

The inn was completely different from what was shown in the pamphlet…

The room was small and there was mold growing in the corners, and the food was way less than what was shown in the photos.

The bath felt great, but they never wrote that you couldn’t take a bath after 8 PM!!!

…Sorry for all the grumbling.

But I was really looking forward to the trip, so honestly it was a huge shock. Yuki said, “It’s fine, this happens sometimes,” but…

Next time, we’re gonna stay at a more expensive place, so I gotta keep working hard!

Let’s do this!!

Getting ready for winter

Ren here!

Last week we had some warm days, but it suddenly became cold this week.

Better get ready for winter soon…!

Drinking party

Ren here!

Yesterday, I went with my coworkers to get some drinks, so I couldn’t post an update!

Everyone was having drinks, making noise, having fun… but honestly, I don’t really like it.

I like having a quiet drink with my family.

Anyways, I was hung over and exhausted at work today…

If you’re going to have drinks, I wish you’d do it if it was a day off the next day, or in the afternoon…!!

Sashimi

Ren here!

Today I bought some sashimi and brought it home. Actually, there’s a nice fish shop right by my house. They always have fresh sashimi, so it’s really convenient.

Yuki seems to really like the scallops from that shop.

I prefer the tuna.

DVD

Ren here! The week’s finished, finally!

Tomorrow’s my day off! Last week, I went to a hot spring, and I’m feeling tired, so this weekend I’m going to rest at home. I rented a DVD to watch tomorrow at home.

I got “Taxi Driver” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” Little Yuki seems to like these two movies. I don’t know much about them, but they seem to be masterpieces, so I look forward to watching them!

Ren

2008/11/03

A good day for blogging…?

I have lots of time on my days off, so I can do lots of blogging… is what I thought, but I guess not. If anything, I’m more often in the mood to write on weekdays. Is it just me?

Holiday’s over, tomorrow’s the start of another week. (sigh)

I took it easy at home this weekend, so I wonder if my body’s recovered?

Alright, starting tomorrow, gotta keep at it!

Tempura

Ren here!

Yuki made tempura for dinner tonight!

Maitake mushrooms were cheap at the supermarket, so we suddenly decided to make some tempura.

We got some grated daikon radishes and soba broth and ate it all together. It was delicious!

Ren

2008/11/06

It’s cold!

Ren here!

This morning, when I stepped outside, there was a cold wind…

Winter’s already here. (It’s November, so I guess that’s obvious) Work is close to home, but I gotta wear a coat and scarf so I don’t catch a flu.

I’m wearing the scarf that little Yuki gave me last winter as a present. I’ve been waiting to use it so I’m so happy!

Ren

2008/11/08

I’m exhausted!

It’s the end of the week! It’s my day off tomorrow!

But I’m exhausted…… That’s it…… for today…… Flop! (collapses onto futon)

Hot pot

Ren here!

For the first time this winter, I ate some hot pot. I bought some oysters, cod, and crabs from “Aketomi,” the fish shop I wrote about in the blog.

The taste of the sea from the seafood hotpot was so delicious.

Tomorrow I’m going to use the leftover broth to make some rice porridge. Hot pot is the best because you can enjoy it for days and it’s really economical!

Ren

Scarf

The handmade scarf that Yuki gave me is really warm! Yuki said, “I knitted it using a trick to make it nice and warm.” If it’s really true, isn’t it amazing? Didn’t think it’s a skill an amateur would know…!

Since she was in art college, Yuki’s really good with her hands. I respect that!

Pocky

By the way, today’s Pocky Day.

When I stopped by the convenience store on the way home, there were lots of them stacked in front of the register, so I couldn’t help but buy some.

Haven’t had any in a long time, but it’s really good.

When Yuki was little, she thought the part that wasn’t covered in chocolate was the “handle,” so rather than eat them, she threw them away. What a waste…!

Ren

2008/11/12

Not feeling good…

Since I got up this morning, my throat’s been sore.

By lunchtime, I felt much better, but when I got home and ate, the pain came back with a vengeance.

I heard it’s important to take care of a cold right at the beginning, so today I’ll get nice and warm and get some sleep. Good night!

2008/11/21

It’s been a while!

Ren here!

It’s been a week since my last update!

The day after I posted on the blog, I had a fever, so since then I’ve been resting at home.

I feel bad for not coming in for work!

I’m also thankful for my little Yuki, who’s been taking care of me. The egg and rice porridge Yuki made was really good.

Ren

2008/11/24

Not yet recovered…

Ren here!

Again, it’s been a while since I posted an update.

I should’ve recovered from my cold by now, but I still wasn’t feeling well, and recently, I’ve been going to bed right away after I got home. That seems to be how life’s been the past while.

The past few days, I finally feel like my health’s been returning.

All of you should take care not to catch a cold!

2008/11/25

Mr. Nagahama

Something a little sad happened today.

I heard that my senior at work, Mr. Nagahama, is quitting this year.

I really liked him since he was kind when showing me how to do my job, even though I’m not good at it. If it weren’t for Mr. Nagahama, I don’t know if I’d still be working at this job today.

When I was still a newbie, he often treated me to a Fanta, which made me happy.

We only have a short time left working together, so I’ll treasure what little time we have left!

Ren

2008/11/26

Still sick

After eating, my belly started to feel funny, then I had the runs.

I thought I was all better, but seems like I haven’t fully recovered.

This darn virus…! Stubborn son of a gun!

Ren

Kitty

Ren here!

Did any of you ever have a pet? I didn’t.

When I was a kid, I asked several times if I could get a dog, but every time, I was told “no.”

The reason I’m telling you this is because I found a cute spotted cat at a pet shop in the neighborhood.

For my little Yuki, it was love at first sight. She kept saying, “It’s so cute, it’s so cute!”

I wanted to get it, too, but our apartment doesn’t allow pets…

I’m sorry, Yuki…!

Time flies!

Ren here!

Tomorrow’s the start of another week!

Lately, I feel that time’s passing faster than before.

When I was in my teens, a week seemed a lot longer…

December

Ren here!

It’s already December! It’s almost the end of another year. That was quick!

In my neighborhood, there’s a house that puts up flashy Christmas decorations every year. Today, when I saw it on my way home, it was already sparkling! Now I’ll have some fun whenever I go home!

But it’s really cold, isn’t it?

I caught a cold last month and had a really awful time, so everyone, seriously, take care of your health!

Ren

2008/12/02

It’s cold!

It’s cold! It’s cold! It’s cold!

When December came around, it got colder and colder. Today, we finally broke out our kotatsu (a heated table).

Right now, I’m writing this blog entry on a laptop on top of the kotatsu!

It’s warm and comfy, but the problem is I don’t want to get out of the kotatsu…

Ren

2008/12/04

Goodbye

Ren here!

Today, when we went to the pet shop, the spotted cat I talked about before was gone.

Seems the cat found an owner. I knew this day would come, but to think I’ll never see the kitty again… Makes me feel lonely.

Hope you’re happy with your owner, little Spotty!

Ren

2008/12/06

So darn cold….

The week’s done!

Tomorrow’s a day off, but I can’t go anywhere when it’s this cold…

I’m gonna spend Sunday watching a DVD with the kotatsu.

2008/12/07

Movies

Ren here!

I watched DVDs all day today.

I watched “The Bridges of Madison County” before and really liked it, so I watched three other movies by the same director that Yuki recommended.

“Million Dollar Baby”, “Letters from Iwo Jima”, and “A Perfect World.”

I heard about “Letters from Iwo Jima” because everyone was talking about it, but I had no idea about the other two. But they were really good!

I’m an idiot, so I can’t really put my impressions into words, but they really tugged at my heartstrings! (Really pathetic that that’s all I can say about those movies!)

Champon noodles

Ren here!

Today, we went out to eat Nagasaki champon noodles.

Every single time, I have a hard time choosing between sara udon and champon noodles. Which one do you all prefer?

After going back and forth between the two, I got sara udon.

Yuki got champon, with some gyoza dumplings.

For dessert, we ordered some almond tofu.

Ringer Hut’s almond tofu is so jiggly and tasty.

Busy!

Ren here!

It’s the end of the year and work’s been busy, so I haven’t been able to post any updates for a week!

Looks like things’ll continue to be busy for the next while.

That’s all for today!

Christmas is in the air

Ren here!

The town’s all Christmas-colored. I love it when Christmas is in the air, and I’m thrilled when I hear Christmas songs playing in the supermarket.

Do any of you have Christmas songs you like?

I like that Mariah Carey song (I like it, but I don’t know the title).

Ren

2008/12/24

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

As I’m writing this, I’m pretty drunk!

Today, we had a Christmas party at home!

It was so fun!

That’s all for today!!

Report

Yuki wasn’t feeling well since the morning, so we took her to the hospital.

When we did, my goodness! We found out she had a baby in her belly!

When I heard that from Yuki, I was so, so happy, I was jumping with delight!

This is the best Christmas present ever!

I’ll have more info for you some other time. We’re gonna be a daddy and mommy!

New Year

Happy New Year.

Ren here! This is an ordinary blog that doesn’t have anything particularly exciting going on, but I think I will continue writing every day. Thank you for supporting me.

Haven’t written since I made a post reporting on Yuki’s pregnancy.

Truth is, we’re having a lot of difficulties, and I really haven’t had time to update the blog. Yuki is now seven weeks pregnant, and it looks like she’s dealing with morning sickness.

The past few days, it suddenly got worse. She’s been throwing up in the living room, almost collapsing from dizziness, and a lot of other things I’m worrying about…

But it’s times like these that I have to hang in there!

I’m a father, so I’ll do everything I can to support my little Yuki and the baby in her belly!

Ren

2009/01/03

Morning sickness really is tough

Today, Yuki had a bad case of morning sickness again. She barely ate any of her New Year dishes. All I could do was rub her back. I felt useless the whole time. I heard that those with morning sickness crave sour things, but I guess that depends on each person. My little Yuki said, “If it’s yogurt, I can eat without feeling sick.” So now, the fridge in our house is packed with yogurt. I’m gonna go to the convenience store to get some more!

Ren

Morning sickness

Ren here!

I thought morning sickness was just a matter of “feeling a bit sick,” but it’s worse than that. Seems that you can feel nauseous just by swallowing spit.

It might seem obvious, but women are putting their own life on the line giving birth.

Tomorrow I start work, and the time I can give to support my little Yuki is limited, but I’ll do everything I can to help out. Gotta stay strong.

So, for the time being, I’ll take a break from posting updates on this blog.

When something comes up about Yuki or the baby, I’ll give you a report. Please wait till then.

Ren

2009/01/25

It’s been a while, here’s an update

Ren here!

It’s been a while. Sorry for not giving an update!

I’m doing good. Little Yuki still has morning sickness.

The worst seems to be over, but seems like it’ll be some time before things go back to normal.

Recently, I started cooking.

I was scolded and was told, “Don’t touch that knife, it’s dangerous!” or, “Tell me when you light a fire!” But if I’m going to support Yuki as her husband, I have to do some proper housework.

Gotta stay strong!

Tummy’s getting big

Today is the 13th week of pregnancy.

Looks like the morning sickness hasn’t stopped yet.

I bought lotsa yogurt again today. We tried all kinds of different foods, but aloe yogurt agrees with her body the most.

Whelp, little Yuki’s tummy is getting bigger and bigger.

Feels like the baby’s growing……! I’m so happy!

Ren

Finally calming down

Ren here! Long time no see.

Sorry for not posting any updates lately!

Since last week, Yuki’s morning sickness is finally getting better.

At long last…

But for Yuki, it probably felt even longer. Thank you for staying strong.

I think there’ll still be plenty of difficulties before birth, but for now we can take a breather.

For today’s dinner, I made hamburger steak. She said it was delicious and ate it all. I’m so happy!

Watching the cherry blossoms

Yuki’s condition seems to have gotten a lot more stable, so we went out together for the first time in a while.

We went to a park in the neighborhood. The cherry blossoms are not in full bloom yet, but they were beautiful.

The two of us sat on a bench and talked about all sorts of things about the baby.

We want to come up with some names, but we don’t even know if it’s a boy or girl. We can’t wait to find out.

Ren

2009/03/18

Yuki’s condition

Looks like little Yuki caught a bit of a cold, so I’ve been worried.

Maybe it was a bad idea to take her out to see the cherry blossoms on Monday… There are lots of other things I’m regretting.

Right now, Yuki’s body isn’t in its normal condition, so we have to be more cautious than usual.

Othello

Ren here!

Yuki felt like she had a cold until yesterday, but this morning she seemed to be much better.

Whew!

This evening, me and Yuki played Othello for the first time in a while. When we first started dating, after eating, we often played with a magnetic Othello board which we got from a 100-yen store… Really takes me back.

My little Yuki’s really good, so I never won a game.

Today, I played and lost five games. Man, completely defeated!

Baby’s moving

Ren here!

Today I have something wonderful to report!

When I got home, Yuki rushed over to me and said, “I can feel the baby moving in my tummy!”

I heard that you can feel the baby move around the fourth month of pregnancy. It’s been exactly four months now, so it looks like it’s growing nicely. That’s good news!

I heard that in just a little while, you can see the baby move outside the tummy. Can’t wait!

Ren

2009/03/23

The size of her tummy

Little Yuki’s tummy has gotten so big, you can tell she’s pregnant even if she’s wearing thick clothing.

I’m so happy watching our baby grow every day.

There’s no rush, so take your time growing!

Ren

2009/03/24

Belly warmer

Since the middle of the month, we’ve gotten more and more warm days. I thought about changing to spring clothing a little early, so this evening, so I got out my light clothing from the closet.

But just then, I started to feel anxious about the baby.

Little Yuki’s sensitive to heat, so she said she wants to wear light clothing, but I’m a little worried the baby will get cold.

I heard there were haramaki belly warmers for pregnant women, so I bought some from the Internet. It was the first time I bought something from the Net.

It’s really convenient that you can by stuff on the Internet nowadays. Getting impatient waiting for it!

Ren

2009/03/26

It’s here!

Wow, the belly warmer I ordered day before yesterday is already here! Amazing!

Yuki wore it right away. Seems she can move around easily without feeling restricted. So glad I bought it!

2009/03/27

Yogurt

Ren here!

Today, something funny… or rather, interesting, happened.

For the first time in a while, I bought the same aloe yogurt that I bought when Yuki had morning sickness. My little Yuki retched the moment she saw the container.

Seems like it reminded her of her morning sickness and the discomfort she felt then.

I guess that happens sometimes. For me, there are things that can bring back trauma just by looking at it, too.

I quickly ate all of it, hid the container in a paper bag, and threw it away.

Gotta be careful from now on…

Baby supplies

Ren here!

Today, my family went to a baby supplies store. Things are going to be difficult the closer we get to birth, so it looks like it’s a good idea to get ready now. Really gives me reassurance!

I thought I would maybe buy two or three pieces of clothing, there were so many things I wanted to buy, it was really tough!

There were all sorts of things to buy… toys, pacifiers, all sorts of cute things. It was hard to choose between them all!

Before I knew it, I bought too much stuff!

As we were walking around the store, there were other couples like us here and there. Everyone looked so happy looking at baby stuff, it really warmed my heart!

Ren

The baby moved!

Ren here!

Something happened today that made me really happy!

My little Yuki said, “The baby’s moving around again!” When I put my ear on her belly, my goodness, I could feel the baby moving!

My first time feeling the baby move! I’m so happy! It’s so cute!

I was in heaven!

Alright! Keep moving, and keep getting stronger!

But don’t kick your mommy’s tummy too hard…

Ren

2009/04/03

Baby moved again!

Ren here!

This evening, I encountered another movement from the baby! (Is this the right way to put it?)

To put it in words, I felt a “thump, thump.” I felt like it was “my baby’s little sounds,” it was so cute!

I want to meet you soon…

2009/04/05

Driving school

Ren here!

Today was actually my first day attending driving school. I’m too old for this… is what I feel, but I think it’s definitely a good idea to have a car once the baby’s born, so I’m determined to get a driver’s license.

I thought, “I wonder if it’ll mostly be young people,” but to my surprise and relief, there were some people my age. If I can, I’d like to get it before Yuki’s tummy gets really big, but it’ll be hard since I can only go to driving school on my days off…

Anyways, I’ll do my best to become a safe driver!

Winter’s back

Ren here!

Until yesterday, we were having nice spring weather, but today, it got cold again.

I wonder if it’ll be a pattern of three cold and four warm days. I’m worried about Yuki’s health.

Once again, I took some warm clothes out of the closet.

Soba noodles

Someone wanted to eat soba noodles, so we went as a family to a nearby soba restaurant.

When I was a kid, we got stuff delivered from this restaurant, but it was my first time to actually go there. The atmosphere was great, and the owner was really friendly.

I should’ve gone there sooner.

The freshly made tempura was crunchy and delicious!

A new guy

Today there was a new guy at my workplace.

He’s still 18 years old and seems like he was raised by a single mother. To help his mother, he gave up on university and got a job. That’s so commendable…

I also started working right after high school, but I was never good at studying in the first place, so university wasn’t an option for me.

That’s life, huh…

I’ll follow Mr. Nagahama’s example and do my best to support the new guy. I still get yelled at a lot, but I gotta be a full-grown adult soon!

Gotta stay strong!

Went shopping

Ren here!

Today was warm, so I went with little Yuki to go shopping at the baby supplies store!

Like last time, we bought all sorts of things.

Times like this, I wish I had a car… I’ll do my best to get my driver’s license soon!

Cooking

Ren here!

Lately, I’ve finally gotten the hang of housework.

I was told, “You don’t have to do this!” But since my little Yuki can’t move like she used to, I have to take over for her.

Lately, my repertoire of dishes I can make expanded by a lot. That said, it’s nothing compared to what the others like Yuki can do.

Today, I made some tofu hot pot.

It got really cold again, so I put in a lot of ginger!

Ren

It was cold! So cold, I wondered if it would snow!

I kept the heater on so that Yuki and the baby wouldn’t get cold…!

Mushroom rice

I went to driving school.

Right now, I’m just focused on studying. It’s like I’m back in school.

Lotsa things to remember. It’s real tough for me. I’ll do some revenge when I get home.

(Translator’s note: Seemingly as an error [or pun?], Ren typed 復讐 [revenge] instead of 復習 [review] since they’re both pronounced the same way)

This evening, we made mushroom rice together. It’s a flavor I’ve loved since I was a kid. The secret is to cook maitake, shimeji, and eringi mushrooms, and then add a little fried tofu. When I’m eating, I become happy when I get a piece of fried tofu every once in a while! All of you should give it a try!

Medical examination

Today, Yuki had a prenatal checkup. I always wanted to go with her, but since I had work, I never could.

My little baby, looks like you’re growing up nicely! That’s so great!

Lately, the baby’s been moving around more, and her tummy’s been getting bigger. To be honest, I couldn’t imagine having a child just a few years ago. But as the baby develops day by day, I just can’t help but feel happy about what the future has in store!

I feel much better with you near me, and I can truly rely on you!

I know this is embarrassing, but like always, I thank you!

Ren

2009/04/26

It’s been a while!

Ren here!

This week’s been real busy…! I’ve been working overtime, so I couldn’t post any updates to the blog!

Yuki and the baby have been doing well, like always!

Lately Yuki’s appetite has increased and she’s been eating lots! She needs to get nutrition for the baby, too.

But you’ll gain wait if you eat too much, so it’s tough to have a balance.

I’ve also been studying food and nutrition. I should’ve studied home economics more when I was a student…

Ren here!

Back to work today. Looks like I’ll be working until Golden Week, even on weekends!

Golden Week

Ren here!

Haven’t made many updates lately.

But things are finally settling down at work. Today’s the start of Golden Week! Haven’t had a four-day weekend since New Year’s! So happy!

But I can’t relax. I gotta go to driving school, get busy with housework, and study for child care! No rest for us fathers! Gotta stay strong!

Third day of driving school

Ren here!

Third day of driving school. It was super crowded today. Driving looks easy, but it’s actually hard once you try it. It’s tough staying in the middle of the road… Is this something I can get the hang of?

My little Yuki recently started doing squats, so I decided to join her.

I used muscles I don’t usually use at work, so my legs are all busted!

Children’s Day

Ren here!

Today is Children’s Day. And so, I bought some kashiwa mochi (mochi wrapped in oak leaves) on the way back from driving school. Yuki rubbed her tummy as she ate, saying “It’s kashiwa mochi.” She’s already a mommy!

Speaking of which, it’s almost at the stage where we can tell what sex the baby is.

It looks like we’ll get an ultrasound in the next prenatal checkup, so it seems we’ll find out which one it is…

What do I do… I’m starting to get nervous…

Whether it’s a boy or girl, as long as it’s born healthy, I’ll be welcoming it with arms wide open!

End of the holiday

Ren here!

Today’s the final day of my holiday! I’m glad I was able to focus on driving school.

I want to get my license before the baby’s born, but can I make it…? It’s a contest against time. It’s a contest against myself.

I’ll stay strong!

Driving school

Ren here!

I went to driving school. Just when I thought I got the hang of driving… I ran into a pole, and now I’m feeling down…

Whether it’s at work or anywhere else, I have a hard time remembering things. Since I don’t grasp things as good as other people, I gotta stay strong and give it my all!

This evening, my little Yuki spent all her time listening to music alone in her room. Apparently, it’s because it’s because it’s the anniversary of the debut of Mr. Children, a band that I love. It seems like every May 10th, it’s Yuki’s ritual to listen to every Mr. Children CD.

Every single CD… Is she gonna be able to finish them all today?

New belly warmer

Ren here!

Little Yuki’s belly is getting bigger, and the belly warmer she’s been using is starting to get a little tight, so we bought a new one. It’s really comfy and the size is just right, but Yuki seems to want something that’s not as thick.

I’ll keep looking until I find something she’ll like!

Reason I write this blog

Ren here!

Again, it’s been a while since I posted an update. Lately, I’ve been busy with all sorts of things and I haven’t had time to write. “Then you don’t have to write anything,” I hear you say… Aw, don’t say that!

Years later, when the baby grows up, I want to say, “This is what was happening when you were in your mommy’s tummy,” so I want to write down as much as I can.

Even if I die (no, not that I plan on dying!!), I want to say to my child, “This is how much we loved you.”

So no matter what happens, I don’t want to delete this blog.

…Huh, starting to feel strangely sentimental.

Tomorrow’s the day we’ll finally find out the sex of our baby!

My heart’s pounding right now. Actually, I bought a book of baby names at the bookstore today. Gotta start thinking about it soon!

Ultrasound

Today was a day off from work, so together we went to a prenatal checkup!

It was our first ultrasound, and when I saw the baby, I was so excited!

However, it looks like it’s a breech baby.

I heard it’s real serious if a baby is born feet-first, so I got nervous. But we were told the baby is still small and at a stage when it could turn around in the belly. So one day, it’ll go back to its normal position. When I heard that, I felt better.

What a relief!

But we were shocked by one thing. Because it’s in breech position, the baby’s genitals are hidden by its mother’s pelvis. We don’t know its sex……

Looks like we’ll have to put off naming it again!

Food preferences

Ren here!

Seems like during pregnancy, it’s not unusual for your taste in food to change. Lately, my little Yuki’s been craving fish. Before, she only ate meat and rarely ate fish.

I wonder if that’s what the baby wants to eat?

Tomorrow, on my way home, I’ll stop by Aketomi!

Ren

Yellowtail and daikon radish

Ren here!

Today, I bought some yellowtail at Aketomi and cooked it together with daikon radishes.

Daikon seeped in yellowtail broth’s delicious, isn’t it?

My little Yuki loved it and ate lots. I plan on stir-frying the leftover daikon leaves with some baby sardines and mixing it with rice for tomorrow.

Ren here!

Long time no see!

Sorry that I couldn’t be with you in such a difficult time…

Went to the park!

Ren here!

Today, I went to the park with Yuki!

It’s almost the rainy season, so it’s time to say goodbye to this comfy weather.

I enjoyed my time outside to the full. I wonder if the baby felt so comfortable it fell asleep, because today it didn’t move and was calm all day.

But I really don’t have enough days off… Next time, I want to go with you!

Mackerel

Ren here!

Today, I bought fish again at Aketomi.

There was a big mackerel, so today we had mackerel fillets and deep-fried mackerel.

(Translator’s note: “Mackerel” and “flavor” sounds the same, so in an apparent error, Ren wrote “flavor fillets” rather than “mackerel fillets”)

I think my cooking skills have gotten much better, but I’m still no good at cooking with oil.

I only did the prep work, everything else was done for me.

It was delicious with plenty of oil!

Folates

Ren here!

Till now, I’ve been studying all sorts of things, and it seems like women are prone to vitamin B deficiency during pregnancy.

Seems like eating foods rich in folates like spinach or asparagus is good for getting vitamin B, so lately I’ve been getting these two things at the supermarket.

Later, I learned about drinks that has lots of folates, so I’m gonna go look for them next time!

This is probably the first time I thought about food this much.

I’ll keep studying more and more!

And I’ll study for driving school, too!

Discovery!

Ren here!

Today, when I went to a convenience store near work, to my surprise I discovered a drink full of folates! I bought it on my way back home!

When I tried it out, it didn’t taste all that great……? My little Yuki also had a doubtful look on her face.

But it seems like you can get vitamin B more efficiently than from vegetables, so I think I’ll try buying it regularly!

AC

Since the beginning of June, the weather’s been hot and humid.

Seems like pregnant women in particular get sweaty around their tummy. She was told to keep the AC on, but she keeps refraining from turning it on.

I told her, “It’s okay, I’ll pay the electricity bill”…… But I don’t get paid much, so I couldn’t persuade her.

It’ll be tough beating the summer heat!

Back to driving school

I went to driving school for the first time in a while.

I forgot what it felt like after being away for so long. Maybe I should’ve gone for driving school camp…? But I don’t have that many days off. It’s too late to do anything now, but I regret not taking it earlier!

Once summer comes, going back and forth between home and the hospital will be a real pain, so I really wanted to get my license before then… but it doesn’t look like I’ll make it in time. What a pity!

McDonald's

This evening, my little Yuki had this real serious look on her face while she told me,

“I want… to eat McDonald’s…”

Truth is, since her pregnancy, she’s been thinking about her body and stopped eating sweets and junk food altogether. But today, she saw a commercial for McDonald’s and had such a hard time resisting it was painful.

I thought that she didn’t have to torture herself like that… but then, for Yuki, or rather, as a mother, it was important.

It wasn’t good to build up stress, so this evening we went to McDonald’s.

Yuki ate a Filet-o-Shrimp that really looked good!

I think it’s definitely better if the baby eats what the mother wants and be happy, so it’s fine to loosen up and eat junk food every once in a while.

Risk

Ren here!

Today is three months before the due date! So the baby’s gonna be born in three months…

I’ve been waiting for so long, but I’m worried. I was told giving birth in your 30s is riskier than in your 20s, so I’m a little worried about whether the child can be born safely.

But at any rate, right now we’ll do what we gotta do. I’ll take charge of household duties so that my little Yuki won’t be burdened! I’ll study nutrition and make meals that’s good for a mother’s body!

And while I’m at it, learn how to drive properly. (laugh)

It’s time for me to man up and stay strong! Let’s do this! Raaaah!

Perseverance

Ren here!

Today, Yuki went out by herself.

She apparently went out to eat with a friend she knows from back when she was an illustrator.

I felt like… it was a world I couldn’t enter.

After art college, Yuki apparently went to Tokyo for all sorts of reasons and became a freelance illustrator, but the world really is a harsh place, so she needed to work part-time in order to eat.

Some time ago, I asked Yuki, “What’s the most important thing for an illustrator? Talent? Skill?” She said, “Perseverance.”

Perseverance, huh……?

Spending time together

Ren here!

These days, it’s been rainy and our laundry won’t dry!

This evening, after exercising with Yuki, we went to a coin laundry.

Somehow, it’s nice being at a coin laundry at night. We spent time quietly reading manga from the bookshelf.

Once the baby’s born, I probably won’t have time like this… When I thought about it, I felt a bit sad.

But more than that, I’m looking forward to life with the baby! Looks like we’ll know the sex of the baby in next week’s prenatal checkup, so I’m really looking forward to it!

Infant care class

Today, I took a day off from driving school and the two of us went to infant care class.

My little Yuki went there several times, but today’s my first time. I was a bit nervous, but the teacher was really gentle and I learned all sorts of things!

When I learned how to hold a baby, I held a doll and was surprised by how heavy it was. Wait, what? Babies are this heavy?... I thought as, rather pathetically, I learned that for the first time.

At the same time, I realized only now how amazing it is that Yuki is protecting such a heavy baby in her body. I felt that I knew all there was to child care by reading books, but really there’s still so much I don’t know.

Rainy days

Ren here!

I’m so sick of all this rain…

I think this low pressure is going to throw my whole body out of whack.

Little Yuki wasn’t feeling well, so it looks like she spent the day resting.

I’m feeling sluggish myself, but it must be even tougher for Yuki as a pregnant woman.

On my way home, I bought some Chateraise iced milk that Yuki loves. I’m glad that she looked so happy when I gave her some!

Crib

Ren here!

Me and Yuki planned to go to the baby supplies store today to order a crib, but Yuki wasn’t feeling well, so I went by myself.

I sent Yuki some photos and after some discussion we decided on one. It was a lovely crib with a warm, wooden pattern!

When I imagine the baby sleeping in it, I get all warm and fuzzy inside!

Please be born safely!

July

Today’s June!

It’s finally summer… is what I want to say, but as usual it’s still raining.

When will the rainy season end…?

The baby’s scheduled to be born in two months. I feel like saying, “Finally!”

Little Yuki’s health has been going up and down, but she’s doing good. For the first time in a while, she stood in the kitchen today and baked some cookies.

And for the first time in a while, I ate Yuki’s cookies and they were delicious!

But her tummy was really big so when she was working in the kitchen, she had to keep her arms stretched out, so she must be tired. Must’ve been tough…

Photos

Ren here!

Yesterday, I looked at some photos I took three months ago and again thought, “Little Yuki’s tummy’s really gotten big!”

I’m so happy the baby’s growing well! Yuki, thank you for protecting our baby! Until the baby’s born, Yuki’s burden will grow bigger, but once it’s born, I’ll be taking care of the baby, okay?

Ren

Ren here!

Today I’ll be talking about the baby’s movements.

I haven’t written much in the blog lately, but during the past two months, the baby’s been moving around more than before. At first, the noise sounded like a “thump, thump”, but now it sounds heavier and stronger, like “boom, boom!”

I thought, “Babies really do grow up in just a couple months1”

We had stir-fried udon this evening!

Even though it’s not as popular as stir-fried soba, I like udon better…

Maybe it’s the hot weather, but Yuki didn’t seem to have much of an appetite, so she only ate a little. I’m worried…

Honked

Went to driving school.

Today, I got off work after the morning, so we both went for a checkup.

We still don’t know its sex…!

Tanabata festival

Ren here!

Today was the Tanabata festival. What wish did you all make?

Of course, I wished for my baby to be born safely. Also, I wished for my little Yuki’s health! (Maybe it was greedy to have two wishes…?)

Since it was the Tanabata festival, I thought about eating something special, but nothing came to mind…

These days, it seems like elementary schools serve a dessert called “Tanabata jelly,” but… what’s Tanabata jelly…? I wanna know!

Supplements

Ren here!

Little Yuki was worried about her nutrition, so she started taking supplements. From what she told me, it’s a supplement she took before!

Since I was told pregnant women are prone to all sorts of nutritional deficiencies, I was relieved!

As always, thank you so much!

Ren

Wouldn’t you know it, the couple next door to our apartment is having a baby!

Busy

Ren here!

This week, I’m working overtime (again), so I haven’t been able to put up any updates on my blog!

Looks like I’ll be even busier after the holidays.

I’m gonna stay strong!

2009/07/20

Stay strong!

We went for an exam.

It looks like it’s still a breech baby.

At this stage, it’s rare that a baby turns itself around naturally, so we need to correct its position ourselves.

We were taught exercises to help turn it around. We’ll do these every day from now on.

I’ll support you in any way I can!

Together, we’ll stay strong!

Ren

Exercises for breech position

Ren here!

Since the exam, we’ve been doing exercises for breech position every night!

We do a cat-like pose and then a bridge-like pose lying on a cushion several times. I’m doing it alongside my little Yuki. (though there’s no point in me doing them [laugh])

It feels really good, like doing stretches.

But Yuki, with her big tummy, seems to get really tired out…

I want to trade places with you, and I feel pain because I can’t…

Summer vacation

During lunch break at work, the streets were really bustling.

Children were walking in a line. Tomorrow’s gonna be summer vacation so today they had an end-of-term ceremony.

Brings me back to my childhood!

But to be honest, I didn’t really like summer vacation…

Whelp, I’m gonna feel blue if I keep talking about this, so now I won’t…

When I become a father, I’ll let my child play however they like!

All you elementary kids, have a fun summer vacation!

Cleaning the filter

It’s hot!

So embarrassed…

Ren here!

Something embarrassing happened today…

When we were doing our usual breech exercises, I accidentally farted!

Yuki got mad and said, “Ugh, stop it!”

I’m so sorry…!!

By the way, it’s been almost a week since we started breech exercises. I wonder if the baby got turned around?

Ren

2009/07/30

Sorry

To anyone who read yesterday’s blog entry, sorry.

For some reason, I remembered something from the past and got really emotional.

I intended to write only fun stuff on this blog… so I did some reflecting.

I already deleted the entry.

I won’t talk about it here anymore.

Ren

2009/08/02

Things’re tough!

I’m a day late, but it’s finally August!!

It’s the middle of summer!!

I’m trying to psych myself up, but honestly, this heat is beating me up.

Seems like Yuki’s not feeling well because of the AC. It’s no good for the baby if you get too cold, so regulating your temperature’s real tough.

Ren

2009/08/03

Still not fixed!

Today we had another exam.

Seems like the breech position still isn’t corrected.

But there’s still a month left until the due date, and if we keep exercising, there’s still a chance it’ll be fixed! Alright! Chin up, stay strong!

2009/08/04

Pregnancy is hard

This is a delicate topic so I won’t get into much detail, but pregnant women really have it tough.

Yuki is working hard to care for her body for childbirth.

I’m also gonna work hard to support her! ...That said, there’s only so much I can do as a man, it’s so frustrating…!

2009/08/06

Watermelon

Ren here! Today we bought a huge watermelon!

But then we were disappointed when we cut it and found it only had a little bit of the red part…

It was really good, but…

Next time, we’ll buy one that’s cut in half so we can see inside!

Ren

Electric fan

Ren here!

Today’s really hot, too!

On my way home, I bought something in the supermarket called a “mini electric fan.”

It’s small but really cool! Little Yuki was happy with it, too!

But the blades are exposed, so I’m a bit scared I’ll get hurt…!

2009/08/08

Yoga

Yuki wants to do some exercises, but it’s too hot to go outside. Since we live in an apartment, she can’t do any exercises too intense indoors, it’s a real pain.

So today, on the way home, I bought a book on yoga!

We all did it right away! I imagined yoga being graceful, but when I actually did it, it was more exhausting than I thought… Maybe it’s because my body’s so stiff…

2009/08/10

One month

Finally, it’s one month before the due date!

The baby’s gonna be born in one month… Whenever I think that, I get so excited!

At the same time, though, I’m nervous. I’m also worried about the breech condition, and about Yuki’s body since she’s giving birth in her 30s.

I just want you to be born safely!

Ayu sweetfish

Ren here!

I bought some ayu at Aketomi today! I didn’t know any other way to eat ayu other than grilling and salting, but it’s also delicious boiled!

Seems like it’s the best thing for pregnant women since it’s full of vitamins! Supplements are great, but it’s best to get your nutrition from food!

Worried

Ren here!

Yuki’s heart palpitations have gotten more intense lately, so I’m a little worried.

I think it’s because of the heat, but I’m worried that something’s wrong with her body.

But a checkup at the maternity care unit didn’t show anything abnormal, so, well, I guess things’re okay?

I told her that I’ll take care of the housework so take it easy.

Something sad

Ren here!

I did say that I only want to write about fun stuff on this blog, but I’ll write about something awful that happened. Today, when my little Yuki was out, she got on a train and a boy who was middle-school age said “fatass” and laughed at her.

Yuki was sad.

If any of you readers ever made fun of a pregnant woman (though I don’t think any of you have), you really need to stop doing stuff like that.

I didn’t really understand how tough pregnant women had it until Yuki got pregnant, but having a baby in your belly is really exhausting.

You were all born because someone had to suffer for you. So I beg of you, please be considerate of pregnant women.

I sound like a snob giving a lecture, sorry about that.

Ren

2009/08/14

Once again…

Continuing on from yesterday, something awful happened again… (sorry, all you readers…!)

Today, when I was shopping at the supermarket, a boy who was with his father said, “My tummy hurts,” and the father only said, “Deal with it!”

I don’t want to butt into another family’s business, but saying “deal with it” just isn’t right. To a child, the presence of their father can be scary, so I wish the father would understand there’s a power difference between him and his child and treat them kindly.

Ren

2009/08/16

Getting excited

Sorry for posting unpleasant stuff the past couple days. I’ll write as many fun things as I can!

I don’t write this in my blog, but since then, we’ve kept doing breech exercises every day! Tomorrow’s the prenatal checkup. My heart’s pumping as I wonder if the breech position was corrected. And then, if it’s been corrected, we will finally know its sex! It’s all part of the excitement!

Ren

2009/08/17

Result

Today we had an exam.

We’ve been keeping up with the exercises for a month, but the breech condition still isn’t corrected.

Yuki was really shocked.

But I was told that, with perfect preparation, a breech birth can be safely performed. I feel a little better. Leave it to a veteran midwife to be so reliable!

Anyways, can’t wait for the baby to be born so we’ll know if it’s a boy or girl! (laugh)

On the way back, we stopped by a cafe and drank juice.

My little Yuki had two refills. Because of the hot weather, she’s been getting thirsty lately.

It’s tough because she has to keep the baby hydrated, too!

Went to driving school!

I actually planned to stay home and take care of Yuki, but I was told, “(paraphrasing) Don’t worry about me, just hurry up and get your license!” (laugh)

In the end, I won’t be getting it before the birth. So frustrating…

But I’ve really gotten the hang of driving, so it looks like I’ll be able to take the baby out for a drive once it’s born! Looking forward to it!

Resting

Ren here!

Little Yuki’s heart palpitations have been getting worse, so she was told to take it easy until she gives birth. It must be a real bother for the normally active Yuki…

I’ll do everything I can to finish my work as quickly as possible so that I can spend the evenings with my little Yuki!

Othello

Ren here!

As I thought, Yuki seems to be getting tired of all this resting.

All this time, I’ve been spending time with her playing Othello. (laugh)

As usual, my little Yuki’s really good, and I can’t win a single game… Boo hoo.

All prepared!

Ren here!

Today was a rare two-day weekend. The due date’s coming soon, so today, we went out to buy stuff that we need.

This evening, me and Yuki got ready to go to the hospital. That way, everything’ll be fine once the labor pains start! Even so, all sorts of things are needed for birth.

The baby seemed to be more energetic than usual. It’s been kicking its mother’s tummy like “boom, boom!” It’s great that you’re so healthy! Keep it up!

Couple

Today, my little Yuki’s been in an usually clingy mood, so we spent all day together.

Only a short time before we can be a “couple.”

Gotta cherish these kinds of moments.

End of August

Ren here!

Today’s the last day of August, huh…?

Lots of people say that the last day of summer vacation is depressing, but it’s actually my favorite day.

September

Ren here!

It’s finally September. The due date’s getting close!

I’m starting to get nervous now, but Yuki laughed and said, “It’s still too early!” I hope it’ll be born safely! With my wish in mind, I’ll work hard at my job and at my home!

Maternity blues

Today, all of a sudden, my little Yuki started to cry. I asked her why, and she didn't answer, so I was confused.

I think it's maternity blues. I sat beside her and rubbed her back until she felt better. The baby's due soon, so we're feeling anxious about a lot of stuff.

Drawing of the baby

Yesterday, Yuki changed completely and is now full of energy!

What’s more, she drew her first picture in ages!

baby-sketch.png

Sooo cute! She imagined the baby about to be born and drew a picture.

I asked, “Why is it dressed up like Santa?” She said, “Because this child is our Santa.”

I thought about it for a sec, then understood what she meant! It’s because we found out about her pregnancy last Christmas!

It’s already been nine months since then! It feels like such a long, yet short, time ago…

Diagram of a future prediction

Continuing on from yesterday, today I’m showing Yuki’s new drawing!

boy-sketch.png

She imagined what the baby would be like after growing a bit and drew it.

According to her, it’s a “diagram of a future prediction.”

The baby will be in breech position until birth, so we still don’t know the sex. So her drawing can either be a boy or girl.

That’s my little illustrator! That’s something no ordinary person would even think of doing!

By the way, yesterday’s drawing had this, too. At the bottom, there’s a number written down. What is that?

When I asked Yuki, she said, “It’s a secret!” Uhhh… No matter how much I think it over, I still don’t know.

Looks just like her

Today, Yuki drew another diagram of a future prediction.

This is what our baby’s gonna look like all grown up! The wind’s blowing through her hair. She looks so cool!

Looks like she drew this with the wish that, if it’s a girl, she’ll grow up to look like this.

She looks just like my little Yuki! If that’s what our baby’ll look like, she’ll become a real beauty!

By the way, she said she’ll draw a boy version tomorrow. Can’t wait to see it!

Looks just like……me?

At last, the due date is in just three days!

Alright, today’s diagram of a future prediction is the baby all grown up (boy version).

Yuki said, “I drew him to look just like daddy.” I already told her there’s no way I look that cool! (But I’m so happy!)

Prayer

Two days to go!

Yuki’s feeling a bit stressed. But she drew a picture! Once she gets her hands moving, she seems to feel calm.

Today’s diagram of a future prediction is of the far future. This is what the baby will look like when she becomes a granny.

Wonder what she’s praying for while wearing white clothing?

Maybe tomorrow she’ll draw him as a grandpa. Can’t wait!

At last, tomorrow’s the day!

At last, tomorrow’s the due date.

It looks like Yuki is already mentally prepared.

Naturally, she wasn’t in the mood to do any drawings. Looks like we won’t be getting our grandpa drawing like I said yesterday.

To those who were expecting one, really sorry!

The next several days will probably be really hectic, so I’ll be taking a break from this blog for a bit.

Next entry, I’ll let you know how the birth went!

A report

It has been a while. This is Ren.

I have finally sorted out my feelings and will now give you a report.

Yuki has passed away.

The baby was born safely. On the due date, she began to have labor pains. We went to the hospital right away.

She was doing well at first, but after she began to push, it was many hours before the baby was born. During that time, her condition had suddenly worsened, and she had to undergo emergency surgery.

The baby was born by c-section safely, but my Yuki died during surgery.

Afterwards, a month passed by in an instant.

Holding a funeral for Yuki and taking care of the baby has been difficult. I had no time to mourn.

But as I write this entry on my own, tears are flowing.

It is difficult, but I must be strong for my baby. I will work hard to raise my child.

To my most beloved

Today, I will stop updating this blog.

Because I now know the secret of those three pictures.

The pain that you were burdened with, I cannot understand.

The enormity of the crime you have committed, I cannot comprehend.

I cannot forgive you.

Even so, I will continue to love you.
